I'm sure that you'll have plenty of responses telling you to get this camera or that one. I think you should yourself get any decent camera, then get a good photo editing program.
As far as taking great pictures goes... that's more up to you and than it is up to the camera.

If you want one of the thinnest point and shoot cameras I recommend the Casio Exilim EX series. I have the EX-s500, but they have come out with newer versions. It also takes GREAT video with Mpeg compression. That means you can take awesome quality video w/o taking up a lot of space on your memory card.
This is my favorite digital camera. The battery life is one of the best too. I owned a Canon before, and I absolutely love the Casio over Canon.
I've brought my camera to China, Taiwan, Thailand, night clubs, etc. It's been great. I also love taking up to 30 minutes of 640x480 (resolution) video at 30 frames per second on my 1GiG memory card. The Canon can only store about 5-10 minutes of these videos on a 1GIG card.
Anyways, just my opinion. Oh yeah, if you are picky about how you charge your camera, the Casio has to be charged in a docking station. For canons, you can pop out the battery and plug it into a charger. I don't mind the docking station though.

You sound like you like to be creative with when taking pictures. I know Canon has that feature in some of their models. Several features actually. They are 'Color Accent', 'Color Swap' , and ' Color Accent'. You can also take your picture in black & white, and sepia.
Canon has an awesome line that can help fill your needs and interests. Consider the PowerShot models, the A460, A530/A540/A550/A560 and A630/A640. Or check out the SD models. Here is a link to Canon’s cameras: http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ProductCatIndexAct&fcategoryid=113
These models have helpful pre-set shooting modes that you choose for the particular picture situation you are about to shoot. Like: auto(matic), portrait, nighttime, landscape, indoor, snow, beach, kids & pets (subjects that won’t keep still), and more… You can also be creative with some of the models, where you can choose special FX settings as you are shooting a pictures. Some models have more modes and features than others, and have the option to program/set your own manual setting, so check the specifications. You should bear in mind, with physical size of the camera, (subcompact/slim/flat vs. compact), you compromise features that are available on the compact/slightly larger models.
I own the Canon PowerShot A620 which has so many of the above features I mentioned. I purchased my camera new online last Spring. My favorite feature of this model is the vari-angle display/LCD screen. It protects the screen when not in use, and helpful for odd angle shots. Picture taking is instant! I have found lag time is not an issue, with this camera, compared to my first digital camera. They now have an updated version of my A620… the A630 and A640. Here is a review and its features (keep scrolling to see the vari-angle screen), up close and personal:
http://www.dcresource.com/reviews/canon/powershot_a630_a640-review/index.shtml
Here is where I go to shop on-line for the best price for digital cameras. (Which I found to have considerable better prices than going locally to your nearest digital camera dealer). Just type in your camera model in the ‘search keyword’: http://lowpricedigital.com/category.asp?master_category_Id=1000 Buy soon or check daily, for prices changes daily amongst merchants. Also check if the camera is being sold ‘new’ or ‘refurbished’.
If you’d rather buy from the store, check the usual places, Best Buy, Circuit City, Wal-Mart, Target, and camera stores. Even consider Office Max, Office Depot, CostCo/Sam’s Club---any store with a camera department.
Good luck!

Well definitely a Sony. Nothing but a Sony. The Coca-Cola of Digital Camera. The Real Thing. Well as you can see, I am an avid unashamed biased Sony fan. Check it out http://www.geocities.com/lcming/sony or http://www.geocities.com/lcming/cameras

Many of the Canon SD series (SD600 through SD900) have that "Color Accent" feature. That's what they call it, so look for that on the box or in the description.
I do not know about other companies, but I am sure someone will add this information if there is someone else out there offering this little trick.

i recommend tat u look into the canon and fujifilm range.
They hav reali great range of camera for different target groups.
Try the G7 or S3 IS from canon...
For fujifilm get the F31.
im nt reali sure if there is a feature available from pns which would provide u to fiddle the colours to make one color stand out from the rest of the picture tat is b/w.
