Im 18 and sometimes at school people mess with me. Im thinking that I should start taking boxing lessons but im afraid that at age 18 I might be too old to start. Do you think that 18 is too old to lear the skill of boxing and do you think that boxing is the best way to defend yourself or not?

18- too old? Not at all.

I would be careful about designating any one system (boxing, Muay Thai, Krav Maga, etc...) as THE best way to defend yourself.

I would also be careful about getting into a fight. You haven't said enough about the situation at school- are other kids teasing you or physically harrassing you or trying to goad you to a fight?? -so I can't tell you how to deal with the people who are bothering you.
But if you DO end up into a fight, you better have a darn good reason for it. And if it comes to a fight, forget about rules and fair play; just hurt the other person as bad as you can.

edit: A lot of fights are taken to the ground. If that happens, how will boxing help you then? And what if more than one person gangs up on you?

I'm not saying DON'T go into boxing- you can if you want to, and it will give you an advantage in defending yourself- but like everything else, it isn't foolproof.

Hell no. your never to old to learn something new. As for boxing being the best way to defend yourself while it may offer some advantages over some martial arts it's not the be all end all of defending yourself. Self defense is not about standing there scrapping it out until the other guy goes down. Self defense is getting yourself out of a bad situation quickly with minimal injury and minimal legal repercussions. A good self defense program should teach not only how and where to hit but also how to de-escalate the conflict or avoid it all together. You'd do well to visit this site.

No, 18 is not to old to learn to box. Boxing is not the best martial art to defend yourself, although knocking out the bully tends to lessen high school conflicts. People tend not to "mess" with the guy who KO's them. Some schools of martial arts specialize in self defense that work as well or better than boxing. Shop around for what is right for you, you are never to old to learn new things.
