In Australia, the language you are taught at school depends on what school you go to and where in the country that school is. The most common second languages that are taught are Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, German, French, Chinese (Mandarin) and Auslan (language for the hearing impaired). Other languages include Greek, Vietnamese, Arabic, Croatian, Hebrew, Koorie languages (which are indigenous languages), Korean, Macedonian, Spanish and Turkish and the list is growing.

Huh? Well A strange variant of English is the first language, and if you're going by numbers, then probably you will find that Cantonese/Vietnamese might tie for second as far as most widely spoken.
Oh right - well Japanese and French are probably the most widely learned in schools now. I hope this is what you mean. I learnt German at school.

Claire K is right. The languages offered in schools differ from shool to school and from state to state. In the state of Victoria, 50 languages are offered in state schools (some by distance education or in special classes of the Victorian School of Languages, so everyone can chose any language, even if their school does not offer it).

Definitely Italian. Are you going to learn that, because I strongly recomend it. I speak Italian, Spanish, and French, and I strongly recommend Italian out of all of those languages.
