Some, not all, but some Christians can speak in tongues. I don't know about other religions or those of other beliefs but I know that some Christians did (see accounts in the Bible) and do, speak in tongues. The Bible teaches that if no one is present that can understand or interpret tongues (what's being said) then speaking in tongues is not to be done. Why speak in a language/tongues if nobody else knows what you're saying?

Hi
There are different types of tongues spoken of in the bible. One type is to be used for the benefit of others...where a second person interprets the tongue.
Speaking in tongues in prayer is a manifestation of the baptism of the Holy Spirit. It can allow a person to pray what is the Lord's will for them to pray. I read a book by Watchman Nee...he said that when he started to pray in tongues one of the first things he became aware of was the reality of satan. He talked at length about using tongues in spiritual warfare.
I've seen tongues used in a group in church, where there was no interpretation...it was just used to glorify God. I don't see anything wrong with it as long as one's purpose is not to try to look more spiritual than others. While I have heard of people who received greater power to overcome addictions etc., that they couldn't shake until they could pray in tongues; I've also heard of some falling away from the faith despite having it. So someone who speaks in tongues may have a deeper walk than some others, it doesn't make them better or more spiritual.

I have read of instances where a Christian, upon meeting someone who speaks a different language, who God has prepared to hear the Gospel, is suddenly able to speak that other persons language. It is for the benefit of that person who is able to hear the gospel.I have also seen on tv and heard on the radio where preachers, when giving a sermon, suddenly begin to speak jibberish, which is understood by no one, and benefits no one. The previous, I think is possible. The latter, I think is a way for these men to make themselves appear holy in the eyes of those they are ministering to. On one radio program, there were 2 preachers doing this,in front of a huge auditorium of people. They were doing this jibberish back and forth and laughing, as if telling each other secret jokes. It was ridiculous. Meanwhile, all of those people who went there to be uplifted by the Word of God were just sitting there listening to all of that silliness.

Act 2:2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.
Act 2:3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.
Act 2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
Act 2:5 And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven.
It is a gift from God for everyone

Speaking in tongues is one of the many different spiritual gifts "available" to a Christian... because of the manifestation of the Holy Spirit....Not all Christians speak in tongues...It's not a pre-requisite to being a Christian, despite what some Christians may say.

Read up on Spiritual gifts...'speaking in tongues' is only one of them.

What it is: The ability to speak a heavenly language...useful in private prayer, or in public ONLY when there is someone there to interpret...Otherwise, it just causes confusion. It happens when the Holy Spirit enables it to in a Christian...

Yes, people can and do... and i am not sure why you say you shouldnt be able to?

I have been to places where people were spewing out in unknown languages with no interpreters.... and I know that they were not acting out God's will... for the Word tells us specifically to not use tongues in public forum without interpreters. It was a loud obnoxious noise rather than words from God...

I have also been in prayer sessions where the prayers of the people, quiet and to God alone, have been in unknown tongues...and while the 'brain' of me didnt know what they were saying, the Spirit in me understood their prayers and prayed right along... it was very humbling to me, because Iwas a doubter in the whole thing.. thinking it was a 'show off' thing that some churches claim you 'must' have to be a Christian.

God can change your opinion in the flash of an eye.... as he did to me... i doubted and He showed me that He can do all things, whether I think He can or not...

It is something you need to seek God in... humans just cannot teach it nor bestow it nor imagine it ....

Oh please don't put that label on all Christians, I find the very idea to be ridiculous. The whole thing started when the disciples came out of the Upper Room on the day of Pentacost. They began to speak and preach the good news of Jesus and there were men from different nations there. Each man heard it in his own native tongue.

Paul later talks about it while speaking of the different gifts that God gives each of us and he says something to the effect that if you don't have an interpreter who can understand it, then what good is it to speak in tongues?

So the Pentacostals have picked this up and taken it to mean that you speak in some sort of angelic language involving mutterings that make no sense, and someone on the other side of the room translates and "speaks" to the congregation. This is supposed to be the Holy Spirit speaking.

The disciples were able to speak in tongues once they received the Holy Spirit. Some people are blessed with this gift now, but we are all given different gifts from God. Praying in tongues is the Holy Spirit praying through your lips and is only between you and God.

Yes...I myself can. It is a spiritual language. A language only God can understand. Some people do it and can "turn it on and off" I don't believe thats real. When people speak in tongues its something they can't describe. Its like something takes you over, the Holy Spirit does. Its like a serious conversation with God. Its not quiet. Its loud and something you can't control. Its Real, and its AMAZING. But, for everyone who will say they can't speak it, so its not real, its a gift you must PRAY for to recieve. In the Bible it says ask, believe and you will recieve, thats what is required to recieve the gift of tongues.

Aside from Christians, certain religious groups also have been observed to practice some form of theopneustic glossolalia.

Glossolalia is evident in the renowned ancient Oracle of Delphi, whereby a priestess of the god Apollo (called a sibyl) speaks in unintelligible utterances, supposedly through the spirit of Apollo in her.
