I am a licensed vet tech, and the $12-15 per hour is pretty accurate for private practice, if you work for a pharmaceutical company or as a sales rep, you can make more. You'll also make more if you work in a city than in the suburbs, or if you get into a specialty, but you might need a bachelor's degree for that. Unlicensed assistants get minimum wage or close to it usually. (CVTs, LVTs and RVTs are all licensed techs, what state you are licensed in determines your initials) Human nurses make a lot more money, but I wouldn't give up vet med for human med for anything. I love what I do and I am never bored, and that to me is worth more than money-but if you aren't married and need to support yourself solo, money will be tight in this career field. But it's also a rapidly growing job market, and in this economy that's important too- I know I will always be able to find a job with my degree. To me it's totally worth it.

Yes, it is more expensive because it is only offered through a privately owned community college. I went through the program and am well aware each time I make a pmt.!! LOL OUCH!!
It depends on what state you live in, but most CVT's get between 12 and 15 per hour. As far as other Associates Degrees, I am not sure, that you would have to ask the college. They can guide you more with that issue. I love the animal industry and am glad that I picked the degree I did.
I do know that you could get a degree to work in a lab, and that pays pretty good as well, but I don't know all the details of the degree and its requirements. GL with your decision.

I do know that not all vet's require you to have a tech license. Some will train you and your duties/salary would increase with your experience. Ask at a few vet offices in your area. I'm sure that like most careers the degrees help with the bigger saleries.

I am a Licensed Vet Tech, and I do not make a lot of money, but that doesn't matter to me because I love my job. I have enough to support myself, and I wake up wanting to go to work every day, which is more important to me than going to a job that I hate, but making a lot of money.
You can try looking into student loans to help you pay for college. The college I went to was pretty expensive also, it was a private college, but it gave me hands on experience working with the animals, which is Very important. With student loans you usually don't have to start paying until you graduate. I have been paying on my loan for about a year now, and still have a year to go. But going to a good college that prepared me for my job was definitely worth it.
Good Luck with your decision!!
