If you are put into a situation in which the truth will serve no purpose other than to hurt the innocent, then it is ok to keep your silence. Otherwise, the truth is always your best bet. Besides, if you always tell the truth, then you don't have to remember what lies you told to whom.

I'm not entirely sure telling a lie is a good option at any time. The problem is that we are all caught up in being diplomatic and politically correct that we can't tell poeple what we really think.
If you tell a lie, no matter how innocuous it may seem sooner or later you'll have to tell more to cover against that first one and then more and it will snow-ball out of proportion before you know it.
