It is cleaner looking, and you can have longer hair, all the way to your ear as long as it looks professional when you have your top on, They shave in Basic because it makes all the people the same, it starts you all out on the same level. It also has to do with the Gas Masks, as to why you can't have longer hair, or any facial hair, it has to have skin to mask contact.

I don't know if they still shave their heads in basic anymore. The short haircut is the best choice for the type of work they do and the uniformity is necessary to promote team untiy.

I suppose you can say it is why football teams wear the different uniforms. You could easily have both sides wear gray and just have one wear blue helmets and one wear red. But it is much better to earn and proudly wear a unique uniform that identifies you as part of a sepcific team.

They do still shave all the heads in boot and it's because:
1. To remove individuality...you can't act like an individual if you are to work as a team
2. For uniformity...if everyone looks the same it looks more profesional in uniform
3. To keep it our of their eyes
4. To prevent sweating so much when wearing a helmet
5. This is not widley known but to keep an enemy from grabing your hair and cutting your throat

Because shaving your head is a symbol of starting a new and better life. (ok depends on who you ask lol) Its a symbol of taking all the old and making new. also when you wear a helmet for 24/6 1/2 it gets extremely hot. Hair can also be a distraction.

In boot camp, they shave your head as a form of humiliation to remind you daily that you have no status and are practically at the bottom of the food chain.

Military personnel are trained for the battlefield. You can't have long floppy and greasy hair all over the place....under helmets, etc. In battle, sometimes you can't bathe - short hair is easier to take care of and is neater.

Basic Training is three months shoved into six weeks. If one shaves their head going in, no time need be wasted on haircuts until its over.

Think of it as re-programming, the military is taking something from that you were used to (long hair) And now you have to conform to military standard, that's all it is. Military members should look very sharp to the average citizen.

It's for hygiening purposes. Hell, when you go to the fleet, you can have up to 3 inches on top and up to medium req on the side. Plus it has to be a fresh cut every 10 days.

i dont know for sure but these are the reasons i thought of:
conformity
head lice
tradition
they dont want any "long haired hippys" in the army
long hair is seen as rebbelios (sp?)
....im sure theres more reasons
