as long as u walk and train those breeds as they need lots or exersize...it should be fine....on a side note we have 2 mutts that are 75 lbs so they are the size of a lab...they are fine in our 5 room estate(lol).i i also walk them once a day for 1-2 hrs it depends on the kid and then they play in our yard most of the day on and off ofcourse and they are trained dogs. meaning I am leader.
*EDIT*
little dogs need as much exersize as large dogs. i feel that its not a matter breed size u pick your still going to have to take it on walks. so if u want a med/big dog get what ya want and look of petfinder..or something of the like.

It depends. I have a large dog, and I live in a small apartment. But I also work at a vet clinic, so I am able to take her to work with me, so she doesn't have to stay home in the apartment all day. I think if someone is able to stay home with your dog for most of the day, and you have time and energy to take him on Long walks twice a day it should be okay. I don't think the problem will be their size, but both labs and goldens are high energy dogs, and if you don't have a large back yard, you will need to find other ways to exercise them. We have a lot of parks around here where you can take your dogs, which is also nice when you have a large dog in an apartment.

If you don't have the time and energy for a high energy dog, I would wait until you get a house that has a nice yard, or get a smaller dog, who require less exercise. Good Luck!

No! they are really bad in apartments. I have a large apartment and we had a golden retriever for a year, she did a lot of damage- Golden retreivers need a back yard and a lot of friends (people or dogs). They are great dogs and I loved having ours, however they need a lot of space! You should be able to give them a yard and house, also anything they break in the apartment you will have to repair. They get up to about 60lbs- that can rip the carpet off the floor with one stroke. I don't recommend dogs for an apartment unless they are under 40 lbs full grown.

You will also be turned away from any respectable aparment landlords in the future with this breed. They just need to much to be able to handle in a small space.

Honestly, a lab or a golden retriever in a closet apartment that goes on nice long walks several times a day is better off than a golden or a lab in a mansion that is only let out in the yard to play.

As long as your dog can get plenty of exercise, it will be fine.

I have a black lab and we've had him since he was 3 months and he has been living in an apartment. He is fine. He doesnt have a yard to run around in but there are dog parks where I live and he gets just the same exercise. He doesnt know any different so how can it be bad fro him?

They can be great, as long as you can provide 1-2 hours of exercise A DAY, year round, for them.

They also can shed A LOT, so if pet hair bugs you, not a great idea.

Also, plan to not leave him more than 5 hours at a time on a regular basis. It's not fair to the dog to be cooped up all day.

And, be sure to rescue or use a responsible breeder. A breeder who follows all the AKC guidelines, the breed club's guidelines, and all ethical breeding guidelines. Labs and Goldies have had to be put down at 6 months old due to poor breeding, so be sure to do all your homework.

Good luck in your search! : )

I would get a small dog. From experience you would want to get a smaller dog because retrievers and labs grow pretty big and you will find yourself needing more space. I would look into a pomeranian, or even a springer spaniel isn't as big and wont take as much space. Good luck.

I think that is a terrible idea, for both the people living there as well as the dog. Labradors and Goldens both need plenty of room as they are active dogs and need space to move! Depriving them of enough space, even with enough daily activity, is just wrong. There are much better choices for apartment dogs out there.

ETA: You'd be hard pressed to find an apartment building that allows these large breeds. Most places have a weight limit for dogs, maybe 50 pounds if you are lucky.

labs and golden retrievers need space and exercise so living in a small one room apartment isn't exactly ideal for them. they will be really energetic and hard to control if they feel like they have no space, freedom, or exercise. a small breed of dog or a dog that requires very little exercise and doesnt mind living in a small apartment will be the right dog for you. hope this helps!
