You can either crush it up with a hammer or something and put it in a glass of juice, or if you want to try the regular way, just make sure you take a fairly large gulp of water and try to swallow just as you normally do.

I also have a hard time swallowing pills and I think that i get a kind of anxiaty about it. I tend to think about the size of the pill and the shape too much and my throat tightens, so when I take pills i dont think about it i just get a big glass of water and take one at a time drop the pill on the back of my tounge and guzzle the water as if I am really thirsty and swallow hard so the pill is sure to go down, also i know people who take their pills with food some crush them up and put them in a table spoon of water but if you do it that way i suggest have extra water to chase it with.

I had the same trouble. It's gotten better. If you use a carbonated drink to wash them down, you won't feel them because of all the fizz.
If I have to use water, I just look at a certain point and distract myself as I swallow.

For other pills and vitamins, I try to buy all in capsules, the soft kinds. Not big tablets or horse pills!

You won't really feel Advil's go down. You'll do fine.
Good luck with the braces.

I could not swallow pills until I was 12 or 13 and even now, I find it difficult. You might try swallowing raisins or some food item, similar in size. Also, you can just put the pill in a spoonful or pudding or apple sauce and let it slide right down. Just try to practice and you will get the hang of it. I guess some of us just have more sensitive gag reflexes than others.

I had a really hard time swallowing pills, too! I had to learn, though, when I was 15 or 16. My mom did a trick with me to help me: she "hid" the pills -- she mixed them in with a bowl of applesauce, and then fed me the applesauce with a spoon, bite by bite, and didn't tell me which bites had the pills in them. I just tried to swallow the applesauce as fast as I could, without letting my tongue feel around for the pills. And it worked!

My grandpa also told me that it can be easier to take pills if you put them in your mouth, and then take a good-sized gulp from a bottle, just like a regular bottle of water. There's something about the way you hold your mouth to drink from a bottle that helps the pills find their way to your throat.

Good luck, you'll figure it out! :)

Send someone to the store to get you some liquid advil. They have all kinds of pills in liquid form--and also in self-disolving (in the mouth) form. If you get the liquid advil, you may need to read the milligrams (could be children's strength), to see how much you need to take (same amount as the pills, in mgs. is what you need to take).

Good luck--a lot of people are getting braces--they're much nicer than they used to be. And, think of how great you'll look and feel when they come off. :)

It is very normal.. swallowing pills is not natural, it is learned. Alot of kids have a hard time learning this and my 7 year old still can't stop the gage reflex. Used to also have problems alot. Trying running your index finger in a downward motion over your throat and adams apple again and again.. that sometimes stimulates swallowing.. also, getl capsules are good to learn on.. they slide down really easy and tend to usually be smaller

get the smallest pill, NOT THE CAPLETS!!!!!! The regular pills are smaller and easier. and, pills are coated, so don't worry about swallowing the second after you take a sip of water.
Ok:
Put pill in mouth
take biggest sip of water possible
tilt head back to get pill off of tongue
swallow.
if it doesnt go down the first time, repeat steps 2-5

don't worry, i had the same problem.
sorry about getting braces.
i'm getting them too :(

Aww shame- braces can be way hot though! I recommend you put the pill in your mouth- laying it to rest on your tongue and grab your favorite beverage and just drink (fast enough that you forget you have the pill in your mouth, but slow enough that you don't choke and cough it up!) it may take a few tries and a few advils- but you'll do it sooner or later- good luck and rock on-
