While I was able to purchase a very nice Garand prior to the release of the movie 'Saving Private Ryan' for $350.00, the interest in these firearms created by the movie and subsequent video games, coupled with the fact that no new Garands are being produced, has caused the price of these firearms to sky-rocket.
However, two variants of the M1 Garand, known as the M1A and SOCOM 16 are still being produced.
The M1A corrected the one minor problem that existed on the Garand, namely that it was difficult to 'top-off' the 8 round C-clips once the firearm was loaded and several rounds had been fired, by replacing the internal C-clips with a 10 round detachable magazine. While there are several other subtle differences between the M1A and the M1-Garand, the addition of the detachable magazine is the most significant.
While I do not own one, I have fired other peoples M1A's and can affirm that their performance characteristics are equal to that of the Garand.
Recently, Springfield had released the SOCOM 16 which is essentially a further refined version of the M1A and, while I have not yet had the opportunity to fire one, I have heard nothing but positive things about this latest addition to the M1-Garrand family of rifles.
Please feel free to E-mail me with any further questions.

The greatest weapon ever created is the M1 Garand and it is a 30-06. We actually specialize in this firearm and have a collection of over 700 of them not counting parts and non firing demo models. If these guys are willing to pay 1200 for shooters grade I'd love to talk to them.. Mine run around 800-1000 for a shooters grade military weapon. There are current production M1's as well for a similiar price. However, if you plan on using it for hunting get a Rem 7400 or BAR. I hate both of them but they are pretty much best bang for the buck in a semiauto hunting rifle. Benelli makes one as well but I'm sure it's more expensive and less dependable, just like their shotguns. I would suggest that if you plan on huning or shooting for group get a bolt action gun.

Get a brand new Remington 7400 and leave the Garands to mil-spec gurus. More people have gotten raked on Garands and their parts over the years and that's fine if they collect. The days of the cheap shooter are gone and why spend so much on an old gun that weighs so much.
Remington makes great centerfire rifles that are new and have mettalurgical improvements over gun steel that was used to make guns 60 years ago. Don't be a sucker.

I can't believe everyone is missing the most obvious!
M1 Garand is perhaps the single most famous 30/06 semi auto ever developed. Last I saw, a shooter grade was running at the $1200 - $1500 range.
Its on my list, but looking at an AR as my next purchase (less stress on the shoulder and wallet - 30/06's can get pricey).

I have shot a 06 for many years and many models. I don't know what use you want to put it to but let me say this...It is an excellent round for medium to big game. it has a wide range of off the shelf rounds but IT KICKS SOOOOO badly !!!!
There are so many versatile rifles on the market in such a wide price range depending on your application.
With reference to a semi auto...I would discourage it.
The 06 packs a wallop at medium range 200-400 yds but your accuracy could fall off with a semi auto and the recoil will be significant..consider a bolt action(stronger too) or 270 0r 280 cal. What is a legal whitetail/ Mulee cal. in Your State ?
a 223. is a super round where legal, very cheap to shoot, and deadly accurate, and great for smaller game. Many feel it too small/light a cal. but it certainly brings down medium game with well placed shots.
Many semi auto's( 30-06 ) that I have seen/evaluated have shot out barrels...this should tell you something.
Happy Hunting

FriendorFoe is right, get the Remington 7400. The Garand is a good weapon as well, but it's higher priced and too heavy to haul around the woods all day long. I've been shooting a 7400 for many many years and it's always been reliable. With a good scope you've got about the best hunting set up there is.

Go to gunsamerica.com and browse the thousands of guns available on line. There are 750 listings for .30-06 caliber. Perhaps a BAR (Browning Automatic Rifle) would be a good place to start.

Like I said in reply to your 'other' posting, Remington, Browning or Garand. But consider also the .308/7.62x51 NATO which is nearly ballistically identical to the .30-06; then you can opt for an AR-10, FAL:, or M-14 but again, these are high dollar rifles so be prepared.
