I have a female canary and i've had her for a year, but she still hasn't had any eggs. She was a baby when i got her, but shouldn't she be mature by now? What is breeding season for canaries? And could my female be a male? The pet store said she was female, but i'm not so sure. I do have a nest and nesting material in the cage. I got my male about six months ago, at least the pet store said he was male. He was mature when i got him.

Yes, the only way to tell what sex a bird is, is to have it sexed. All the vet does is clip it's claw down to the quick and takes a drop of blood as a sample. It is very accurate, but expensive. We had our parrots sexed about 7 years ago and it cost about $75 for each bird. Birds' genitals are up deep inside the bird, so looking would be difficult.

You could actually have 2 males or 2 females. Do you really think the pet store owner would pay that kind of money to have canaries sexed? I think he just wanted to make a sale.

And I agree with someone who answered above. Just because you put them together doesn't mean they will mate. Sorta like putting two humans together and expecting them to automatically like each other enough do the "deed"

I hope this helps.

find a book which shows male and female canary traits like the beak and plumage patterns. You may have the same sex. Otherwise, they may not be the breeding variety. Patience. Some birds require certain nutrients to breed not found in caged environments. Find a book on breeding canaries. Some females and males actually peck their eggs.

You should have their sexes checked either surgically by a vet, or with DNA.

Even if it is a male/female pair, it can take some time for them to get used to each other and mate. Just because you put a male and female together doesn't mean they will automatically mate and produce babies.

It can be difficult to tell males and females apart sometimes.
Make sure with a DNA test.
