I believe that the general public believes that they are condensation trails (contrails). They believe this because this is what they were taught. Recently some conspiracy theorist believed it was these contrails that were corroding his aluminum foil hat, and that he concluded that these were actually chemical trails. I thought it was a joke so I read some of their web sites, and it's scary to think that there are people out there that really believe this nonsense.
