i have a sony handycam dcr-hc30 camcorder, and when i go to record the screen is black, on both the viewfinder. it will record sound but no picture. everything else works on it but the recording. it is a 2004 and not used very much. can anyone help?

What you have is a defective CCD. Sony should fix it for free, but you will have to send it directly to them. Just in case though, if they find something else wrong with it, they may charge you for the repair. But since it sounds like you are only having a CCD problem, I wouldn't worry about it. The link below goes directly to their troubleshooting guide online for your model. I think if you follow the steps they will show you exactly how to send it in. Good luck!

It looks like a CCD problem. And if its under warranty SONY will repair it free of cost.

You will need to take it to the repair shop as those are very complicated.You can look up the shops in your area if you don't know of any .

double check and make sure the lens cap is not on?
