If you have not consolidated your student loans, it is possible to apply for loan forgiveness otherwise you are stuck repaying the student loans. The federal government does have a program to repay student loans for nurses in rural areas of the country. Also, check with the state government website or search for it using Google.com or Yahoo.com, too. Good luck!

What you're looking for is called "loan forgiveness." Loan forgiveness is typically limited to certain high-need areas such as teaching and, yes, nursing. The programs typically require the loan borrower to work in a high-need profession for a certain number of years; the government will then pay off a portion of your loans each year.

Now, keep in mind that these programs do not apply to all high-need professions, nor do they apply to all types of federal student loans. Stafford Loan forgiveness is typically limited to teachers, which means that you will probably not be able to shake off all that Stafford Loan debt. Perkins Loans, however, come with a wide range of loan forgiveness options, including an option for "full-time nurses or medical technicians" to receive100% forgiveness of their Perkins Loans. Because Perkins Loans are administered by individual schools, you will need to contact your Perkins Loan servicer in order to apply for loan forgiveness. The company to contact will the same one that's been billing you for your Perkins Loan -- sometimes this is a school, sometimes it's a private organization that services the loan on the school's behalf.

Some states and private agencies will also offer loan forgiveness. To start with, try this link: http://bhpr.hrsa.gov/nursing/loanrepay.htm

Alot of times the government will pick up the tab for student loans if you work in the medical profession , but the catch is that you have to work in an area they deem in need.

Unfortunately, signing the dotted line on the student loan is the equivalent of signing your soul away to Satan. Take a look at the following website: www.studentloanjustice.org. You might say that it's very "educational". Good luck.
