Chihuahua, Yorkshire Terrier (Yorkie), Maltese are all good breeds, as long as you get them from a reputable breeder.

Dogs that are good with people are raised around many different types of people, children and babies. YOU should be responsible for discipline and making sure your pet has manners.

You should also spay or neuter your pet once it is old enough. People who are not reputable breeders shouldn't be breeding dogs.

Also, if you don't have the time to devote to a puppy, don't get one. (Most 8-10 week old puppies require constant attention in the day time, and every two hours over night to go potty and play for a bit.)

Research any breed you find you want.

www.akc.org is a good website.

How much time do you have? And is that going to change in the next 15 years? Toy breeds really shouldn't be left home alone longer than 4 hours on a regular basis.

Sure, chihuahuas, yorkies, and a few other toy breeds stay small (most are under 10 pounds), but they can be HIGH maintenence. Expect $1000 a year on proper upkeep, $1500 the first year you have her (not including purchase price), and $1000 for emergencies.

Toy breeds are VERY prone to medical emergencies. A leg break or a patella fix can easily reach $1000. And many many dogs have these problems. And, the cheaper the dog, the more likely these problems are.

Toy dogs are also very hard to potty train. If you don't have a ton of time to work on this every minute of the day, then your dog will pee everywhere you don't want her to. On your work shoes 15 minutes before work. On your bed 10 minutes before bedtime. On your bookbag the night before your essay is due. On your briefcase the night before the big presentation. You get the idea.

By the sounds of your other questions, you sound quite young, so be sure you are ready to make a 15 year committment to your dog. This means never working an 8 hour day straight through, without proper puppy sitters. This means no spur of the moment vacations. This means no all day trips. Etc.

Toy dogs make fabulous pets, but they require a patient owner with some expendable income and someone who is willing to either rescue or find a good breeder.

I know this seems like a lot, but a new dog will be 100 times this amount of work. Better to be prepared now than to be stuck with an overpriced poorly bred sick dog who just peed on your formal dress.

Good luck to you in your search. : )

Picking a puppy is a big commitment. There are alot of breeds that stay smaller, but all have very different personalities. There are websites that you can go to in order to find out your "dog" preferences and puppy needs. You should check out www.doggies.com or www.akc.com to read up on breeds and their characteristics. These sites should also have some great pictures of the cute puppies! Also, www.petnet.com has a short "quiz" to help you find the right breed. It will ask you about your preferences and needs and then tell you what breeds fit your needs.
As for my personal preference - We have a 4 year old westie. He is a small/med size dog. We love him:)
Good luck:)

How much time and money do you want to devote to a dog. I've seen many people get rid of dogs because of the time they consume. A Chihuahua is a good small low maintenance dog. I have a Shih Tzu and this type of dog is high maintenance. She needs brushed everyday, monthly grooming with a groomer which runs into an added expense you might not be considering. They are absolutely adorable and lovable dogs but you need to consider that size isn't everything. Small is good but you need to consider the upkeep to a dog like a Yorkie or Shih Tzu as opposed to a Chihuahua. Consider maintenance along with small. Good Luck.

A yorkie is a wonderful choice! My Yorkie is my best friend and though they do require some grooming, it is not at all like people will let on for it to be. Standard Yorkies should be about 6-8 lbs. and they are the best! they will adapt to your schedule. During the time that you spend with them, they are completely complient. They want to do whatever you want. Go run in the park or curl up and watch a movie. And because they are so small, they can pretty much go with you anywhere. Almost all vacation spots have pet friendly motels.

No offense to the Chihuahua lovers, but if you are not willing to hear barking 24-7 I would really think about that one.

I have two chihuahuas one is a vicious thing at 3 pounds and the other at 5 pounds is a lover. I also have a very lovable tiny mutt that I got from the pound. My friend has a poodle. Yorkies make excellent house dogs, but remember poodles and yorkies will cost you in grooming fees as will a shiz and a maltese. If you want to provide a dog a loving home, go to the pound, read the sheet on the dog that is posted on the cage , it will state their temperament, how they get along with kids and why the owner got rid of them. Many of these dogs have very little time, so saving one would make you feel wonderfull.
