My mother told me when she was young (back in the 40's) that fad was to chew your food but don't swallow it to lose weight. You would spit it in a napkin after you were through chewing it. This would give you the taste without the calories.

for all but the elite food was not in abundance in the 40's due to the Second World War, the economy was in the tanker.

bodybuilding first really came to light in the 50's and people just didn't understand the concept of eating healthy to reduce body fat. the 60's-70's is when people really started to become became more health conscious (this started on the West Coast).
