From all wars the Tomb of the Unkown is for. If we are unable to find out who a soldier is, this is where they go. God Bless!

The Tomb contains the remains of unknown American soldiers from World Wars I and II, the Korean Conflict and (until 1998) the Vietnam War.

There were eight, until the remains of the Vietnam soldier were disinterred and identified.

There are three "unknowns" interred at the memorial. They represent World Wars I, II, and the Korean "conflict." There is no unknown from Vietnam. Thanks to DNA that "unknown" was identified.

I always thought it was a mistake to keep adding unknowns. We should have stayed with ONE, the first one, as the symbol of those lost in all our wars.

In our family we still have two missing. One from World War II (in the Philippines) and one in North Korea.

For many years, there was just one, from World War I. His remains are inside the large monument. Following the Viet Nam War, unknowns from World War II, Korea and Vietnam were placed in small crypts just in front of the monument. DNA checks were eventually able to identify the soldier from Viet Nam and his remains were reinterred by his family elsewhere.

Just out of curiosity why didn't you do an Internet search on this? There is so much info on google.com that I'm surprised at some of the questions that are asked on here.

Can't tell you how many, but one from WW I to Korean. Normally one military member in the crypt.
