Okay. How to take lice off. That is the easiest part. I'm very sure your mom has already got RID and you've used it. So, lice are not the problem, right now. You now have to get rid of the nits. And that is a struggle beyond belief. First of all, tell your mom to have a stiff drink. That always helps. Then get a stool, and a very bright light on your head, and here is where Mom has to work. With the comb provided she will need to look at all the strands of hair...this is known to take several days...sorry! What she should be looking for is little 'teardrops' on the head, that is the nit. You can tell if the nit has been 'hatched' or if there is still embryonic lice by the shell itself; if it appears to be a sort of sliver, it's most likely hatched and no biggie; the ones that give off a 'reflection' with the light above your head have yet to be hatched. Unfortunately there is nothing that can assist in the removal of the 'glue' that is attaching the nit to the hair shaft. Scientists for YEARS have been attempting to duplicate this very industrial strength 'glue' substance, so Mom is still stuck with the tried and true method.
Now, there are several things that make this a tad easier. One is something I did myself; that is I purchased at Wal Mart a spray on hair coloring, I got bright orange. I sprayed that all over my daughters head and what occurs is that the coloring mattes your hair so it's not so shiny, and you then can be able to see 'specks' on the head, and THERE is a nit! My daughter had gorgeous long curly blonde hair, in utter frustration; after five days I cut it to shoulder length because of the issue with the pulling the nits out was getting tangled with her hair. The second time this happened I said "Enough!" And got out a phone book and called every single hairdresser in the county to find one that was willing to do this for me. Cost me a bit of change but I'd do it again; time off work, time peering down the kid's head, headache, eye strain....best decision I ever made regarding fighting with these little suckers.
Now I have been told to try Tea Tree oil to assist with nit removal, and peanut butter, vaseline, etc. But I didn't have a lot of success but put that in your back pocket for future reference just in case. Just because it didn't work for me, doesn't mean it won't for your pretty little head.
Take care sweetie! Give your mom a hug and go at it again!

Put a thick coat of vaseline on the person's head. Cover with plastic wrap, let it sit for an hour, then scrap it off. Wash the person's hair several times, and comb through until no more vaseline comes out. You do this every week for 3 or 4 weeks. Also, wash your blankets and sheets, anything you wear, in very very hot water. Throw pillows away and get new ones.
I forgot, use vinegar to rinse, that is supposed to loosen that "glue" that holds the nits to the hair shaft.
Put stuffed animals into a bag and seal it shut, if they are small enough, put the bag in the freezer for a month. This will kill the lice and eggs.

There is a product on the market called RID, it works very well. It is quite costly, but the results are worth it. Follow the directions that come with the product and in a few weeks you'll be fine.
