The physical cause could be when you don't inhale enough of air containing the normal amount of oxygen or if your lungs haven't exhaled all the accumulated carbon dioxide-rich air. This makes the body long for more of fresh air and so we sigh, allowing the body to inhale more of oxygen-rich air.
There could also be a reason for a deep sigh to surface, when we are stressed out or deeply engrossed in some exercise or mental thought or problem that is exciting us. During such occasions, our breathing is not normal, is short or is disturbed by a lot of talking. On occasion, we also experience extreme moods of sorrow or self-pity due to specific events, when we get somewhat depressed, affecting our normal breathing. In all such situations, we may be depriving our brain of essential oxygen that is breathed in through the lungs. This could also trigger a reaction in our brain to sigh deeply, so as to help the lungs to inhale more of air.

We tend to hold our breaths at intense moments that could be stressful or when we are just in deep though or very much caught in the moment. It's a defensive reaction by our bodies, an attempt to conserve whatever breath we have at the moment.

The sigh comes after we hold our breath as we release it and take in another mouthful. This usually happens when we become aware of our situation and relax a little.

The more intense the moment the deeper the sigh.

Maybe to realize our frailty and inability to take control over each situation a sigh is given off from us.

Its a release of everything we hold inside us all the time. Sometimes your body needs to let that go- or you become tight and stressed.
