feminists are always saying that, but why so? if it's because girls can't do anything about it, then that's false. girls do have limited control over the way they look. and lets assume that girls aren't attracted to good looks. they attracted to smart, funny, and popular guys. guys have little or no control over those things. some guys just don't have high iqs or didn't get a good education. and some guys, like me, just aren't funny. i have a sense of humor and try to be funny, but people never think of me as the funny guy. and if you think it's just not right to make girls change their appearances and worry about their looks so guys will like them, then is it really right to make boys try to be something they're not just so that girls will like them? so feminists, is it not shallow for guys to be attracted to pretty girls? or is it also shallow for girls to be attracted to smart, funny, and popular guys? or are you just a bunch of hypocrites?

so from what i gather, if i go to a woman and say, 'i think you're hot', she should not be offended or feel that i'm disrespecting her, and if she does, she has a problem. right?

I've never heard a feminist say that. Everyone is attracted to another for some reason or another.

There is nothing wrong with being attracted to someone based on looks. Shallow would refer to having no other attributes which to base your decisions on, or in belittling those who do not meet your requirements.

If attractiveness is your only construct for choosing a date - you're shallow. If it's just the first in a line of many - it's not.

I think you've got the wrong ideas about this. If you have ever dated a pretty girl, just because she was pretty, you will know that looks only hold your interest for a short period of time before something more substantial is required to keep you interested (you can get used to the way an attractive person looks very quickly): Unless, of course, you are shallow and a person's outer package is all you need to keep you amused long-term, in which case you might choose only pretty women to date regardless of their personality, intelligence, interests etc.

To your second question: Yes, generally a woman who cannot take a compliment on the way she looks has a problem.

A guy is shallow when he is only attracted to a girl because of her looks. A lot of girls are shallow but because of the double standards, it's easier to say only guys are shallow. The true question is, do you care about looks or do you care about personality? If you feel that physical beauty outweighs a persons character, then I would consider that grounds for someone to be called shallow. Both men and female can be shallow, it's not just men.

I think when your in school the pretty girls are attracted to the popular guys. But its not always the case in the real world! I dont think its shallow for guys to be attracted to good looks. Its a preference of looks.

I think valuing one trait over all the others without any regard to the various things that make up an individual is shallow.

And I agree, one has about as much control over how funny they are as they do how they look. I am pretty damn clever, and can often come up with the right remark or inflection to elicit a number of chuckles -- others simply can't.

it's not shallow for men to be attracted to good looks because men are visual beings. my boyfriend is a highly intelligent, articulate person with many hobbies, but he melts like butter when i bend over in front of him. i don't find it offensive when guys appreciate a beautiful woman. it's how they handle their reactions that matters. a man can appreciate beauty and still treat the lady with respect. shallow guys start drooling and acting like idiots. that's the difference.

keep in mind that most feminists are not concerned with women's rights or equal treatment. a lot of them are on the 'blame the men' bandwagon. afterall, if the feminist movement is about equal treatment, why is abortion at the top of the ballot? there are so many more important battles to fight, like allowing women in combat, equal pay for equal work, and parental leave instead of maternity leave. so, look and enjoy, just remember to respect the lady.

It's not necessarily shallow to be attracted to what one considers physical beauty, but if that is the only criteria that a "guy" uses to determine whether or not she is worth getting to know then he is suffering from hormonus interruptis-- that condition that results from the blood rushing from his cranial head to his lesser nature center thus making him incapable of functioning in a logical or correct manner

ALL people are generally attracted to good looks. I think feminists are more concerned about the guys who ONLY see women as sex objects or only date beautiful women with one thing in mind. Its really normal to be attracted to attractive people..and you are right..it goes both ways. Girls do it too.

it's o k to have expectations and to care about looks. It's shallow when everything has to be absolutely perfect. The girls pretty, but she has 3 freckles on her arm so I won't date her...that's not good. Girls shouldn't do that with guys either..
