While you are considering buying a laptop, also consider buying a desktop instead. Although you can't bring it the the coffee shop, you can get a much better machine for the same price. Plus, you will be able to upgrade it easier later as new technology comes out. You often can't upgrade laptops very much. This is especially true of graphics cards. Also, laptops tend to have a shorter life span. More things go wrong with them, especially because laptops are constantly being moved around and put in places that expose them to danger. My laptops have always worn out quicker than my desktops. Plus, the batteries stop taking a charge after a while, and a new battery can cost a lot. A brand new battery from Dell might cost as much as $150.

If you do want a laptop, Compaq and Dell offer some of the lowest cost ones. Dell lets you pay monthly payments (like $20 per month, which can make the purchase more affordable). However, the interest charged is steep. Other brands probably offer similar services. Apples are nice, but more expensive.

i have a dells laptop and it's very slow. The word and exel and great but the computer is a millions time slower than a regular laptop. I suggest getting apple becuase it's lightweight, has a bright screen, excel and word are excellent, works with itunes very good, has a 3 year warrenty, but the price is between 700-2000. Kind of expensive but worth your money. You can buy it online or at a apple store.

all I know is not to buy gateway. I bought gateway and it didn't even last a year. I am 25 and take great care of my things. It was faulty from day one. I kept calling support and they kept telling me it was a virus. As soon as it was no longer under warranty they said oh...it's the motherboard. Great!!! I know a lot of people who like Dell.
