I believe that the seeds on a fruit are inside or attached to the fruit, so that when the fruit rots it provides a source of nutrition for the seed. A vegetable seeds are external. Thus a tomato is actually a fruit.

Vegetables are the stems or leafs of a plant (lettuce, celery) while fruits are the reproductive organs of a plant which is why they have seeds. Many fruits - such as tomatos and zucchini are mistakenly considered vegetables by most people because they are not sweet.

Anything with a seed is a fruit, believe it or not, tomatoes are fruits. As are avacados. If it has a seed or pit it is considered a fruit.
