I think that anyone who starts a home daycare deserves much respect. I looked all over for a good daycare for my kids (2 & 3 1/2) and was very disappointed in the centers i found. Then i found a woman who did it from her home and she has been an ANGEL. She has a waiting list miles long because of word-of-mouth. She accepts part-time kids, so that brings in more business since big centers make you pay a full week even if the kids are only there for 15 hours. She has a late fee of $10 a day after sunday so you have two days leway but big penalty for going over. She has a great bond with the kids (my kids LOVE her) and great schedule (7-6). The only con would be that you have to make sure your house is up to standards AT ALL TIMES because they drop in whenever they feel necessary to inspect everything.
And she DOES have her two weeks PAID vacation spelled out in her booklet she made. (1 at xmas and 1 in the spring) and if you are as dependable as she is, if you get sick one day, your clients will understand..

Well, some of the pros are that it can be a decent money maker, depending on the number of kids that you care for, it keeps you busy and in shape, chasing all those kids around, keeps you on a schedule, it gives you the opportunity to invest in a child's life. The cons are that you don't have time to get personal things done during the week, you always have kids in your house, you can't take a nap, you can't take off when you're sick, you can't sleep in. But, everything has pros and cons. If this is what you really want to do, go for it. Commit to it for a year and see if you can handle it. If not, don't feel bad. Just make sure you give the parents plenty of notice to find a new daycare. Good luck!!

I have worked in daycare centers and I have also watched an infant in my home. The advantages are you can make money while staying at home. The disadvantages are you cannot leave the house during the day and unless you have a designated area your house will be trashed and dirty by the end of the day and it will be more work for you when all of the kids leave. Also, if you have your own kids they may resent the fact that you dont have as much time for them. Why dont you start out with a couple of kids and see if it really is for you.

I think you should think it over carefully. Consider the pros and cons. Pros - Being able to work from home will be helpful if you have young children and need the extra income. Cons - It is a big responsibility and there are many liabilities taking on the care of children. Is your home safe? Will you have a plan of daily activities for the children to keep them busy? Consult other home providers and ask questions. Make sure you have a contract for parents so they aren't forgetting to pick their children up on time.

I personally would not want my schedule tied to other people's work schedule. I want to raise my kids, not raise a group of kids. I want my children to have a family, not live in a day care center.
In addition, day care is so very harmful to infants and toddlers, I wouldn't want to be part of damaging a young psyche like that.
Before/after school care could be a terrific thing, if you have school aged kids. Then, all the kids can play and you can get a little break while earning money.

If you can handle the committment then here are some pros and cons.
Pro, you can have your kids there too
Con, people will cry and try not to pay you.
Pro, you can never be late to work
Con, people will try to dump off extra kids without notice.
Pro, You can make a decent wage
Con, That's if people pay you
Seriously, so many people screw you out of money because they "just don't have it right now". They treat you as if you are less important than any of their other expenses...ie: cell phone bill, clothing extras...etc...
