The styptic powder isn't working, and the blood just keeps coming through. How can I stop it from bleeding quicker?

Wow Roxie, drama queen? People cut their dogs' nails too short all the time. Maybe you need to take something to calm your nerves. I'd hate to be around you in an emergency. I left the nail alone, and it stopped, but I put flour on it anyway, just to be sure. Thanks

If the toenail is cut too short, you can use a styptic pencil containing silver nitrate to stop blood flow, although many animals object to the styptic pencil as much, or more, than toenail cutting. The black end of the stick is held to the bleeding nail and gently rotated until bleeding stops.

Even without any treatment the nail should stop bleeding in about 15 minutes or less but u should try to stop it to prevent blood loss

Flour, baby powder, or soap (bar), stick his nail in it. No need to apply any pressure the nail is hard you need to clog the bleeding and those powdery substances will do it. Just stick his foot in it.

Hold a towel over it and put pressure on it. I'm surprised the styptic powder didn't work.

Sometimes I have used corn starch.. but constant pressure is your best bet. Normally, this is not a serious issue although a nail can bleed for a while.. try not to worry.

I new someone who did this (not sure how they stopped the bleeding) but the dog never let them get near their nails for cutting again.

See if you can pick up the brand called "Kwik Stop" from your vet for future use--I think it works the best. Some of the ones you find at pet stores don't seem to work very well.
