your cat probably has been to hell and back that's why she is so scared..you should give her own space somewhere in the house so when she;s stressing or nervous she can go in the bedroom or somewhere she can rest and get some peace..you tell your dog no in a rough voice when he;s terrorizing the cat should .or you could put him in a room for 5min when he does that to the cat'and he;ll start to learn that if he;s mean and bad to the cat it;s time out.i have 3cats and my poodle used to terrorize my cats .i did these things and in a month they were all getting along,,,i think you are the right family for her..give it time.if she has to go to the shelter again she;ll probably give up hope and her spirit....,,,good luck to you all,,,,,,

Your dog is poorly trained in how to deal with a cat. If you have taught her how to sit still then make sure she does, then encourage the cat to come out and be nice to her. You have to show your dog that the cat is part of the pack, since dogs have pack mentality.
Basically you need to show your dog good cat manners. How to be nice to her and such.
Your dog likely sees your cat as an intruder, not part of the family but something to be chased and maybe played with. If you wait for this to treat itself then the cat will just be more stressed.
Once the dog is dealt with the cat will soon acclimate to your family, and your dog and cat will likely play without intimidation. You'll likely at some point even see the cat tease your dog so that they'll play together. At this point it's pretty easy to guess that they're getting along.
So again, work on your dog to give her good manners, she's never had to deal with a cat and needs to know how to behave and you as the pack leader should tell her. Teach her manners basically. The rest will fall into place.

Cats and dogs do not usually get along, especially if you bring an adult cat into the house that already has a dog living in it. You can get away with bringing a dog into a house that has a cat, but there is a good chance that things aren't going to get much better. it seems as the dog and as you also have kids, are always going to have the upper hand in the house. The cat may want to come out and play, but with all the commotion, good chance the cat isn't going to come out and isn't going to be very happy in your home.

if the cat has never been around a dog much before, then running and hiding is a normal behavior. Whether or not the kitty will improve is unknown. The main animal to work on is your dog in this case. Your dog is used to you and your discipline, so try being very strict with the dog when he messes with the cat. If the dog begins to learn that he will be punished when pestering the cat, then he will stop. As the cat becomes more comfortable in the house, and realizes that the dog and the kids will not hurt her.. she will start to come around more.

put the dog in pet cage or another room sometimes, to give it a chance to get to know your family,it is scared of the dog could of been around a bad one before or never been around one at all,try and control the dog and make it stop chasing the cat ,they can learn to get along mine do.if it doesn't work out try and find a family to take it that has no dogs. good luck, most times if a kitten grows up with a dog they get along better too.

Right! The dog is the one to work on, it needs to be trained not to chase the cat, a few lessons with a trainer at petsmart might do a lot of good for both of them

Just give it time. My husband had a cat and he was very aggressive toward my cat when we got married and moved in together. After about six months they were laying together. I'm not saying your cat and dog will lay together but they will eventually get accustomed to each others scent
