First of all...congratulations!
So, I've got a question for you:
Do you want to give her something unique? Or, something that's fairly common?
(Not that common is bad, mind you...there's a reason that alot of women have princess cut diamonds; when cut properly, they are absolutely beautiful!)
If you want unique, consider either an Asscher or emerald cut. Both are kinda "old-school" cuts that are rarely seen today....especially the Asscher cut. But, on big, high quality diamonds, the Asscher and emerald cuts are truly breathtaking.
If you want something a little more "common" (again...common isn't bad here...just more, well, common...) then you can't go wrong with either a princess, radiant, or Tiffany cut on the diamond.
Also, you MIGHT consider getting her a fake diamond ring to propose with; then go shopping for the REAL one together. This tactic will accomplish three things:
1) You'll be able to surprise her;
2) She'll get the diamond (and ring) she wants; and
3) She'll have a "back-up" ring to wear on occasions where she would rather not wear her expensive wedding ring.
Hope this helps!!!

Buy a princess cut (or square brillant). It is the most popular cut for women ages 20 to 40 right now. Dont get a 2 carat diamond though. It is MORE impressive if you get several diamonds. Say a 1 ct diamond in the center and smaller diamonds on each side (that then add up to 2 cts or more). It will shine more and it will look like you spent even more money on her than just 1 diamond alone.

Check with her friends or family what kind of shape she likes. I love and have a princess cut diamond (square) but she might not like that style. I absolutly hate the marque cut and I am so glad that my husband asked around first to see what I would like. I would rather do that than waste my money on something she might not like. My 3 favorites is princess (square), emerald (rectangle), or the classic round.

My fiance gave me an Asscher cut. I had never even heard of it. Its beautiful!!! I get so many compliments on it. Just got one this morning when I was writing a check. When he was picking it out, not having a clue on which one to get, the woman who was helping him told him that when girls come in with the guys to look at rings, more and more are picking the Asscher.

If you're getting 2 carats, you're pretty safe no matter what! Cut is personal choice, I myself like square cut, it's classic and modern at the same time. Princess is also nice. Look at different shapes on the web and see what YOU like, too. Guys have pretty good taste, and it's your dime, too. I'm sure she will like anything you get her. Don't get tear drop shaped, it's not a favourite. Some brides like it but I think it's pretty dated.

round / princess cut - can't go wrong with either one - square and other shapes - people either love them or hate them;
Make sure you have done your homework, there is more to a diamond than just being 2 carats....clarity, cut, color matter as well.

Are her fingers long? If so then an Emerald cut looks best. If they are shorter or have some meat on them then you want to pick a round stone. Look at her rings that she wears, does she favor a stone cut? If so then go with the cut she prefers.
Good luck!
PS I would steer clear of the pear cut or marquise cuts, they tend to look very dated (think 1980s)

If she likes a "square" diamond then radiant cut it the best. It doesn't have to corners like a princess cut that can chip. I LOVE mine!!! Have fun picking out a ring!!
