Historically a sin eater was someone tha absorbed ths eins of others at their death. The procedure was that the family of the dying woudl set up a large feast and the sin eater would come and devour all the food, all the time praying and asking God to transfer the sins of the dying person to them. It was beleived that only if the majority of food were consumed would the transfer take place.
