There is a condition called "terminal decline" where an older person just "gives up." They have fought for years and are tired, they just let go and don't want to fight anymore. It is not a "condition" that can be identified through medical tests. But it is a possibility.

The other advice is good too. Second opinion, yes. Turn over every stone, but keep this in mind.

I know this is a difficult time for you. I think life is a circle. If we are allowed to complete this circle,we will become as we started.Your Mother is 83 and it sounds like She has done her task well. You obviously are a caring child,She raised a loving, responsible child. As She cared for you, now, you must care for Her. You did the right thing by making sure that She has the care and attention that She needs. She's tired. If you think back, you can see that your mother has put a lot of love and living in 83 years.Just continue to love and cherish Her.You are lucky to have your Mother for all these years. I lost mine at an early age. Try not to worry and enjoy these precious years. Bless you all.

I had a friend who's grandma did the same thing. I told her i thought she was dehydrorated ( lack of enough fluids in her system) and i know if you are anemic (SP) low iron level in the blood you will want to sleep all the time and not have any energy. turns out i was right about my friend. i am a certified nurses aide and have worked in hospitals and nursing homes. i would get a 2nd opinion on her for sure. and make sure the nursing home is feeding her well and gets enough water. you may want to feed and give her drinks if shes able to do that. Good Luck to you. Hope it all works out. and GOD BLESS YOUR MOM

It is going to be really difficult to understand this, but a lot of older people decide that they don't want to live any longer and put themselves into a state of decline.

Your mother sounds like she is choosing this for herself. When older people have to be hospitalized multiple times, it causes them to become depressed and they choose to not eat or exercise and slowly fade away; this is the only remaining control they feel that they have, as everything else has been taken away.

You need to stay involved in her care, and make sure that she is being watched carefully and kept hydrated. I have delt with this in my family and with several friends who have had simular experiences with family members.

I will pray for you and your family.
