Do you have a fixed, cemented into place "retainer" or one that you can take in and out of your mouth?
If it's a fixed, cemented to just the back side of your front teeth, you just have to get used to it. It takes a few days.
If it's a removable one that covers part of the upper and lower inside of the mouth, closest to the tongue with a pink plastic material, and has metal wire that runs along the front of the teeth on the upper and lower, then you take it out to eat. When they said wear it all the time, that means all day and night. But you "do" take it out to brush and floss, and to eat.
Good luck and I hope I've been of some help tonight.
If your still unclear as to which one you have, call your orthodontist office tomorrow and ask.

Is it a removable retainer? i was told NOT to eat with it when I had one..I say take it out, it doesn't take long enough to eat a meal to have two years of braces move your teeth back!

Hmmm I was always told to take mine out. You could have a special situation though. Double check with your orthodontist. If that is the case, it'll just take getting used to. Just the same as you had to get used to talking with it.

at first you are reallt bothered by it. then , just like contacts and new shoes, it becomes a part of you . You "forget: it is in and you discover- wow I can eat in it. At first you have trouble talking, you have extra saliva- all things calm down after just a few days. You can drink milkshakes and slushes, That actually helps them feel better, and helps you learn that lots of things are easy in them. I would go for mashed potatoes, soup, spagetthi, that kind of thing - until you get it down. If you can learn to live in your retainer, you'll get done twice s fast. For every hour you leave them out for whatever- you loose eight hours worth of wearing them. Be care where you lay them, dogs and cats are attracted to them and chew them up. alwasys put them in your case in a drawer if you have pets or at your friends if they have pets. Don't try gum, it will stick everywhere.
