Very often, yes. Things to look for:
1) Long fingernails -- as in, long enough to make it difficult to type or hold a pencil. This just screams, "I just look cute, I don't actually _do_ anything."
2) Overdone hair and/or make-up.
3) Questions during the getting-to-know-you phase that center on superficial aspects of a man's financial status ("What kind of car do you drive?" and so on).
4) Fascination with image, even in the face of a clear lack of substance (as in, she likes hot guys who treat her badly over average-looking guys who would treat her well).
When I was single, I ran (not walked) from women who displayed more than one of these signs. I don't recall a single instance of being wrong in my initial judgment.

I try not to judge a book by it cover, but when I see a girl who looks high maintenance, after meeting her, I'm usually right.

Most guys look at the cover of the book and sniff that **** out a mile away.
If you dress high maintenance, and look it, then chances are going to be you are high maintenance.
Everyone knows not to judge a book by its cover, but the cover is all we have to go by at first.
