i dont know about gin, but i can tell you all about vodka. the quality of a vodka depends on how many times it is filtered. if its filter many times, the vodka will have fewer impurities. less impurities means a cleaner taste and less of a hang over. grey goose is considered a high quality vodka. however, you can filter cheap vodka through a brita water filter.(pitcher) if you do this 3 or four times, the cheap vodka will taste much better, almost indistinguishable from the most expensive bottle.

There are a lot of good high end Vodkas. Popular opinion says Grey Goose is the best, but you should try Zyr or Ketel One. The top vodkas are in the $30.00 range. If you want cheap try Bukov i think or Popov. they both are like drinking rubbing alcohol. As far as gin goes, try Tanqueray 10 or Bombay Saphire. Both are great. I've never tried cheap gin.
