I like this guy and I'm trying to get to know him better. I want to call him and talk to him and stuff but what would I use as an excuse to talk to him?

Also, he knows I like him and I have no classes with him. He plays football if that helps. lol.

Call him and say "I was talking to someone about football and she said something about a "Nickle Defense" what does that mean.
He may talk all night:)

Look for things that you might have in common with him and start a conversation base on that. Maintain eye contact all the time while taking to him, plus try to read his body language (will help you to determine if he into you or not).

you just want to talk or see whats up. ask him about the weather. ask him if he wants to hang out sometime. ask him where have all the flowers gone pretty much anything will be a good excuse. lol
