first thing to do is check your yellowpages.com for a vocal coach in your community who is affordable and has a solid background on producing successful students who had the same difficulties that you are experiencing. second, ask if they give the first lesson free to give you an analysis of your vocal condition and to be honest if there is any hope in producing a good vocal instrument that you want. that way the instructor can tell you what range you sing in, and what songs and exercises you need to further develope your voice. Join a school choir, run, and do a lot of cardio. You need air to sing. And if you dance try walking for 90min and sing at the same time with your ipod or cd player; it will kill two birds with one stone. Listen to the girls that are auditioning for the Pussycat Dolls they go out of key when they are dancing because they do not have enough wind to do the singing and dancing at the same time. I hope I answered your question good luck and be patient, if you really want to be a singer it requires a lot of training and discipline just as much or even more than an athlete. I have been singing and dancing for over 35yrs. papa hanko

Choose a song, and record yourself singing it. then listen to it and work the song through note-by note (just hold out that note and sing that phrase until you get it right) then you need to warm up every time before you sing (you can buy dvds with vocal warmups on it) then every day practice this son. Once you can hit every note, work on your vabrato. To do this, shake your arms like your punching while you sing. after about a week of this, work again on stablizing the notes.
After one month, record yourself again. You should sound alot better.
Your problem might be that your singing through your nose, or using a charecter voice. Dont shout, or use a voice that isnt yours. it will never turn out like you think it will. (personal expierience!!)
I really hope i helped!
Good luck!

What you hear in your head is the natural resonance from a combination of your chest, sinus cavity and throat, plus the induction of the vibrations going through your bones. No one really sounds on the outside, the way they do to themselves. This is a very common complaint among new singers, especially ones that really care about what they are doing. There are a few things you can do to help you get used to the way you really sound to everyone else however:

1. Adjust your posture and breathing to get the most out of your instrument. Your instrument is your voice and it needs fuel, amplification, and resonance. Fuel in this case means air, so breath from the lower diaphragm and fill the bottom of those lungs up. Yes, your stomach is going to stick out a little more, but if you sing well enough, nobody is gonna be looking at your stomach anyway. Amplification is the way you focus and project the sound from inside of you, to the ears of your audience. Stand up tall, put your feet approximately shoulder width apart, roll your shoulders back to where they just break and fall naturally behind you (roll them around a few times until you feel them break) and tilt your head just a tiny bit forward to open up your throat. Resonance is the size of the reflecting chamber. This means that you have to open up your chest, your throat, and especially your mouth. Take a look at all of the best singers and what do they have in common? They all open their mouth wider than we are generally used to doing.

2. Listen to yourself. Get an inexpensive tape recorder, or download a free-ware audio editor such as Audacity or Fatrock Studio. Make an audio diary of your singing every day. It doesn't always have to be a long passage and it doesn't always have to be even serious, but do it every day until you can hear a genuine improvement. Part of that will be an actual increase in quality, but a major part of that will be the fact that your ear will begin to hear what you sound like from the outside in, and not just from the inside out. You have to learn to hear that sound and even more importantly, you have to learn to appreciate it.

3. Learn to control your voice. When babies are born, they make large clumsy movements because they do not posses the fine muscle control to make those graceful gestures that you are capable of making. The voice is the same way. When we begin to sing, we slip and slide all over the place, but a trained singer builds steps and learns how to focus the pitch into something worth sharing. Match pitches with a piano, guitar, harmonica, or with a recoding of another singer that you admire. Match pitch with recordings in your collection, and even with the radio. Think of training your voice in the same way you would train for a marathon. Build up your endurance, control, range of motion (or range of pitch in this case) and fluency or speed. Sing as low as you can (and then sing a little lower) and sing as high as you can (and then sing a little higher) Keep track of your progress the same way you would keep track of a good long jump or speed drill. Measure your progress over months, not days, and don't get distracted by putting yourself down. You are in this for the long haul, and you can't let a few plateaus (those periods when you feel you aren't making any progress) get you down.

Remember, this is a common feeling and if you were to talk to almost anyone who is as serious about singing as you are, they would tell you that they feel the same way. Hope this helps.
