Who deserves it the most? The driver that has the best season, naturally ;)
If I had to chose, I'd also go with Mark Martin ~ he's always been thissss close.
Go Mark!

No one DESERVES anything, championships are EARNED.
If the question was stated, "Who's the NASCAR driver without a championship who has come the closest the most times?" I would have to say Mark Martin. If he stays with Ginn and races every race this year he WILL be in the top 10 with a good chance of taking the cup. If he doesn't it will be a real shame to "hand" the points lead to Gordon.
For all of you that answered this question with Dale Jr...don't you think he has been GIVEN enough. The least he should do is EARN a championship.

I was going to say Mark Martin and I still am, but ready the other posts made me think a little more. It is laughable that people say folks that have been in Nextel Cup a few season. When I read the question my intial reaction wasn't who is the best racer but who would be a good Champion. Martin certainly would, the man is all class. Reading another post, got me thinking more about Kyle Petty and the things he does off the track. Yes, he has never been a premier driver in the likes of so many other drivers, I blame a lot of that on the team choice for those nasty Pontiacs during his prime. Same goes for Martin. My brother was a huge fan of Martin's before the Viagra sponsorship (he was 23 and not about to wear anything that said Viagra, enough said) and I always told him Martin would have a Championship if he was in a Chevy and I think he would. Anyway, I think Mark Martin and Kyle Petty would "deserve" a Championship because of who they are. They would be great Champions.

I guess if I could pick someone who deserves it is Mark Martin. But that will not happen, unless he chooses to run a full time schedule, if he does, I think this year he could, he is off to a great start. I also agree with a couple of others, Ken Schrader, cause he has been driving since 84, and if he could get with a well established big team he probably could. Also I have been able to watch Ken do some Local track racing, he is good, and he is a really nice man. And then there is Kyle Petty. For a lot of us, I think that he is a sentimental favorite. Due to loosing his son on the track. And also with all the stuff he has done since then. He is an all around good guy.
But WHO do I think will win this year. I want to bet half the farm on Jeff Burton. And the other half I have to bet on Tony Stewart. For Jeff, I think he has made a lot of progress on the way back, he has been hot, and I think he will get really close if not win it. And Tony, well I just love the guy, he is my favorite, so that was a given.

Definitely Mark Martin. He's finished second, third, fourth, and fifth more than anyone else that's been in Nextel Cup as long as he has. He's always been the type that if he don't have a stronger car he will settle for second or third before he will race dirty or take any chances of wrecking the other guy or himself. There's too many selfish and big-headed drivers now and no more like him.

Mark Martin. Here's a guy who was a driver owner in early years, had to fold and try to get a ride. Got on with Rousch and stuck with it there for 18 years with some success and now with hi s confidence wavering has found another team that can put a car under him that enhances his driving style. gotta be Mark Martin.

Mark Martin since he has been so close but never won a championship..it's his turn now...
And secondly, Dale Jr deserves it.. he has worked hard & deserves a good race car to win with. He needs a win to carry on the DEI reputation.
