No cornice mouldings--they provide a division that "sets" the height of the wall RIGHT THERE.

And use paint colours close enough that no division between the wall and the ceiling is obvious.

Easiest way to make ceilings look higher is to hang the drapes at ceiling height rather than window frame height. The painting technique explained above about taking the ceiling color down on to the walls works, too, so if you incorporate both, you would believe the difference.

A trick I learned from an interior designer is...paint your ceiling a dark color and extend that same color down the top portion of your walls about 12-18 inches, then add a thin piece of molding to match the dark paint. It works! I did it in a foyer and the ceiling looked not only higher, but the contrasting colors looked great!

I saw on "Design on a Dime" today that painting your ceilings white will make them look much higher. Painting then a color will bring them down and look shorter. Good luck!

Paint it white. Even if the rest of the walls will be a more colored white, paint the ceiling a white....flat, not eggshell or gloss, flat/mat.

If you wall paper, use vertical patterns.

I'd paint a tape measure on the wall... but inaccurately... that way it'll say 16 feet when it's really 9. Works great.

One trick is to keep your furniture low. Keep the backs of chairs, sofa etc. low and the walls will seem taller.

Another is to keep the amount of furniture to a minimum. Don't overcrowd the room with accessories, keep it minimal.
