This guy is really sweet, and sometimes has a hard time saying no. How do I make him feel comfortable and not backed into a corner when I tell him?

I had a friend with the same intentions with me and she just came out and said she would like to take our friendship to the next level, worked for me.
Then he can decide if that is something he would like, If not you need to decide if you still want to keep the friendship the same.
Sometimes these relationships are good because you have the bond already as friends which is the most important part of any relationship.

well if he is a really good friend then I think that the best way to hande it is just come out and ask him. There is no reason to beat around the bush. Tell him how you feel and see how he feels. Just be careful in what you say and or do just in case he is not intested in you that way. Think long hard and ask yourself is he worth it. Cause on one hand he could have the same feelings for you that you have for him and on the other it could be really akward. But my vice is to tell him how you feel. You need to just tell him straight up. He's a guy and probably won't get the hint. There's a fine line between flirting and what women do naturally.

Come right out and tell him. Or drop off a lot of hints first, like flirt with him and if he flirts back, then you tell him your feelings.

tell him that ur starting to like someone but u dont know wat exactly u should do then a day or to later wat ever he told u to do . do it and tell him that u like him more than a friend and if he doesnt feel the same way about u then tell him to just forget that u even told him. hope i helped. good luck

you start complimenting him, and smiling at him more often...
if he looks disturbed or confused, then abandon your efforts and consider asking another question here so we can provide you with better advice.
if he blushes or smiles, move into the flirting mode.
