I suggest you go with a Miniature or Standard Poodle. The standard is considered a large breed, while the miniature is not tiny yet still a good size. If you maintain the coat of the Poodle, allergy-sufferers can live in peace. As for you and your mom not being affected by your current Maltese, this is because the Maltese has a coat which is similiar to human hair, and therefore, not prone to excessive shedding, such as the Labrador. The dander from a Labrador is intense, but a Maltese or Poodle coat sheds very litter dander.
If you want a sturdy and highly-active dog, go for the Standard Poodle.
If you want a nice size and still energetic dog, go for the Miniature Poodle.
Also, if you want to add more details as to what kind of dog exactly you are looking for, I could give you more specific suggestions.

Poodles and shih tsus are small and don't shed. Although the dander from the skin is what causes allergies, dogs that don't shed seem to be less likely to trigger allergies - but not always - it depends on how sensitive the person is. Also keep in mind that maybe you and your mom have mild allergies, you can live with one dog, but adding a second dog might make things worse. The more dogs you are exposed to, the more likely your allergies will flare up. Something to think about.

get a Pomeranian...they're delightful! my dog coco puff is 7 years old now and ive had him since he was 8 weeks old! He is very obedient and loyal. Their hair is hypoallergenic so it shouldnt bother your allergies. Thats why you can tolerate your Maltese. Their hair needs some tending to, like your Maltese, i usually take him to the groomer every 2 weeks or so. Hope everything goes well!

Do your study and come across a breed that suits you, or bypass on your close by shelter and undertake an animal in choose. in spite of the indisputable fact that, opposite to conventional perception, mutts are no longer inevitably greater healthy than purebreds, and the actuality maintains to be that a responsibly bred purebred is the healthiest canines you may get. you assert your domestic dog died?
