I have a Jack Russel/Beagle mix and we live in town home complex and everytime he hears a noise outside he just started barking his head off. He does it weither he is outside or in. I don't want to have to resort to a shock collar if i don't have too.

They sell no-bark collars that spray a mist of citronella everytime the dog barks. (The collar senses the muscle contractions in the dog's neck when it barks.) The citronella is annoying to the dog, and it will train him not to bark. I think they're about $60.

It's not like it's torture. And you can give the dog treats when he DOESN'T bark.

Here's a cheaper approach...

Find something you can jingle, like a can filled with a few coins. Shake the can and give your dog a treat. Do this about 10 times and he'll be trained to expect food after the jingle. Whenever the dog barks, just shake the can and he should take his attention off the other people. Food is much more important to them. As you see the dog getting distracted by noises or other people, just shake the can.

Buy a training collar that shocks in low voltage everytime the dog barks loud. I used this on my Pug when she would bark at us when we ate...she wanted some too! I put her in her crate and she still barked. Then after getting the shock collar, I put her in her crate with collar on. It only took a couple times before she got it. I don't have to even use the collar on her anymore. The key is to only use it when they are excessively barking. Some breeds of dogs are just YAPPY. Jack Russels are one of those breeds. The collars do work.

You can try the citronella collars. They work the same way a shock collar does but instead of a shock, it sprays citronella which dogs hate.

But the shock collars do work very well. I have one for my own pooch and she behaves wonderfully when she's wearing it!!

they have collars that admit a highfreequncy that they can hear that wil stop the barking or one that sprays a mist also.

You can buy a hand help remote that also admits the sound so you can do it when you please.
My husband had a pomeranian that never would shut up. everynoise it herad it barked. protecting its home.

So you might have to live with it till he adjusts

first of all take him on walks.with confidence that he'll walk peacefully with u.I'm getting this stuff from the dog whisperer.don't look at him when you walk him.
lets say u walk home to him barking...don't look at him ,walk with positive energy don't greet him just walk home like if he's not there.
tell him ey shush loudly.every dog is used to that sound. don't say it harsh though say it loud, clear, respectfully, and with confidence if he barks walk to him with confidence, don't look at him when you walk to him...then say ey shush loudly while looking at him with confident stern eyes!

Well, there is no definitive way, if you have a new dog you will get used to it, I promise, My dog does this too, but if you really want to train him try holding oin to him when a loud noise happens and do this every time he tries to bark, I dunno anything else, ask you veterinarian for how to do it.

Shock collars aren't that bad- they certainly work. My dog doesn't bark anymore, and he's still completely neurotic.
