Just curious...

Thanks for the answers so far.

...
BTW: I'm an atheist who does, unfortunately, engage in this 'practice' due to depression and other things.

I frown upon that too. I don't like to get hurt, so I wouldn't purposely hurt myself.

Your body was created by God, and you were created for a specefic purpose. You are to treat your body as a temple of God. Self injury is not a good, productive thing unless you are cutting your arm off to save your life, ect ect... You already know that it is wrong, why do you ask this?

Scripture says not to cut or mark ourselves like the heathens do. I have no doubt that includes scaring and tatoos.
Scripture explains that as we receive Jesus as our savior, His Holy Spirit comes and dwells inside us. God doesn't live in buildings. Scripture tells us that there is nothing physical that is holy on this earth, including buildings. But it also says that our body have become temples for God to abide in. What kind of temple would you want to offer to God. I believe that it is our responsibility to take care of our temples the best we can.

I can hear the question coming already: What if you are disfigured or have been seriously wounded. To that I answer, Scripture says that to those God has given much, much is expected and to those God has given little there is less to care for. Remember the parrable Jesus told of the talends that were given for safe keeping...

The body is the temple of God and we are to protect it. In all that we do we are to worship and glorify God. Does self-injury bring glory to God??? In my opinion I'd say no it does not bring Him glory and thus isn't a practice in which I'd choose to participate.

Self-injury (such as cutting, burning, ect...) is also wrong because first it's a psychological disorder, and second because it is damage to yourself. God says to love our neighbor as we LOVE OURSELVES. That means we must be loving towards ourself.

It's not wrong to do things for the Kingdom of God such as Fasting or physical Mortification.

God loves us and created us, and when we realize the depth of that we wouldn't WANT to hurt ourselves. You should read Matthew or Luke in the Bible they are really cool... Talks a lot about the character of Jesus

Sweetie, I am really sorry about your depression. If you are hurting yourself physically you must be really hurting emotionally. Please see a therapist or talk to someone about your depression and the way you feel. Feel free to talk to me too (email:yoshi_116@hotmail.com)
It feels so much better when you talk to other people. It makes you feel less isolated and the pain actually lessens because it is shared.
Good luck
