I got a consultation and they said that I would need a rapid palatal expander, but there is a chance that it will not work and I might need that surgery to seperate my upper jaw sutures, could someone explain that too me? He said about 10-15% chance. I am 22, how do I know if they have fused or not? And is $500 a reasonable price for the expander? And how much pain/cost associated with that surgery?

The upper jaw suture is the midline of your palate where there was a problem with the palatal shelves growing together during embryonic development. It sounds like you have an 85-90% chance of the expander to work, and yes, $500 for a rapid expander is quite reasonable.
You can tell if the palatal sutures have closed by looking at the palate. If there is a blue line down the middle, they haven't fused.

I never saw a case that the expander didn't work on, but it is possible. The surgery on the jaws is a bit more involved than one thinks. The oral surgeon office can explain it better to you. They deal with the surgery all the time. Just call an office. As far as I remember, you are in the hospital for a day or two. You can get extremely swollen, and they want to monitor your ability to swallow and such. Most people said they were glad they did it, but knowing after what it felt like they would not opt to do it again. I know that doesn't relieve any fears, but I hate when people aren't honest about the amount of discomfort or aggravation. It seems like anyrhing in life, if you and I went out the track and ran a mile, I'd be dieing and you mght be able to go another round. Sometimes it is what you expect that gets you, instead of what it is. Will you be sore - certainly. Will you have to change you diet til lit heals - certainly The rapid palital expander is going to give you a huge split between your front teeth - that means it worked! don't worry they fix it.They are hard to eat in, don't let them kid you, you onlly hit on the appliance in the way back , and they are a mess. But I'd opt for an expander over surgery any day. Sometimes they work extremely quickly. They don't tell you how fast it can go in case it doesn't. Plan on at least several weeks , up to 3 months if I remember correctly.

Jaw surgery is very safe nowadays. There is one company that is very famous in India that arranges Laser surgery for foreigners in India. They are called the Fly2india4health Consultants. I read a lot about them in the Newspapers and about their patient stories. I have also read that they arrange financing for international patients, as all surgery is not covered by insurance or by the stinking NHS.

They also have photos pasted of their International patients. You can checkout their website. The cost savings are incredible. As a doctor I personally believe that your Dental surgery can be easily handled in India, as the quality of Healthcare available here is simply best in the world. The surgeons are USA/UK trained and facilities are 5 star.

My cousin got her Dental surgery done there and she is more than very happy with the results. She is all praise for Fly2india4health Consultants. She paid just 20% of the cost what she was quoted in USA and it was like a wonderful vacation for her. Hope this helps
