Ok. My friend. The resources mentioned in the other answers such as MySpace and Friendster are ineffective. If you want to advertise your product, it means you want traffic for your website. Now you're not going to get any money if you have nobody coming to your site are you? Avoid free advertising because it is more of a hassle than help.

What you should do if you really dont want to spend money is to write articles. I'll give you an example.

Let's say the product you're selling is an e-book on how to maximize your profits in affiliate marketing.

All you have to do is write articles on something to do with affiliate marketing. Remember never to sound as if you are trying to sell a product. But you have to sound knowledgable. Because in article directories, you are given a "Bio Box" where you can write about your website.

If the people like your articles, they will click on your websites link to find out more info wont they?

Here is 1 great article submission directory I use.

www.goarticles.com

This site submits your article to various directories on the internet so your article gets more recognition!

It's one of the most effective methods to generate traffic, which in turn will generate sales.

Hey, I've heard quite a bit of good things about http://www.craigslist.com - a friend swears by it. She uses it to give away free things and pick up free things. If you don't want to do that, or are uncomfortable with strangers from the internet coming to your house to pick up stuff, if you're willing to put in some footwork, maybe you could put up a few fliers at maybe a local laundromat, they usually have bulletin boards inside that they allow people to post up stuff in there... but... that's not online...
So all I can tell ya online is craigslist... heard a lot of good things about the site.

Good luck with whatever you decide though.

Take it easy,
miR :)

Here are a few of my suggestions:

1. Start submitting your url/product to directories and search engines. Being indexed by these websites will help you get more people coming into your site.

2. Be active on related forums and chatrooms. This will also make you create our own network.

3. Promote your website/product to community sites like friendster, myspace, etc.

Good luck!

You can advertise for free on craigslist http://www.craigslist.org Another good place is http://www.usfreeads.com/ but you can only put up one ad for free. Avoid FFA's for sure!
