don't use black, because most black paint contain green pigment and it will make yellow greenish.
Whenever you try to create a darker color, use the color that's on the opposite side of the color wheel. In the case of yellow, purple. Remember to mix purple to the yellow, not yellow to purple.

If the color is too bright, then you can tone it down by adding a small amount of the color that is opposite yellow on the color wheel (called the complimentary color), which would be violet. Or add a small amount of the earth color called raw umber.
Be aware that when large amounts of two complimentary colors are mixed together, they will neutralize each other into a cool or warm grey. So make sure you only add small amounts of violet at a time until you reach the shade you want.
You can find more detailed information at www.dundean.com. Good luck and most of all, have fun!

If it is too bright add white to soften it. If you want it a bit darker depending on how you want it too look. Add some black but too much will make it gray. Add dark blue and get a nicer neutral yellow but not a true yellow.
Yellow and blue make green so be careful the amount of blue you add.
Red cancels out green/so if you want less green add red
Green cancels out red/if you want less red add green
Blue will give it a more greenish yellow appeal more like a neutral/you could add just a little black too. this will warm it up

Add a small amount of violet. Black will make yellow look dull and "dirty". Violet will bring down the value of the yellow without stripping away its brilliance. But all of this is subjective as you did not specify how dark you wish to make the yellow! Essentially you can add as much or as little of any colour that is darker in value to yellow. But any color that you add to the local color (yellow) will shift not only the value (lightness or darkness of a color) but also the hue (saturation of the color)! Hope this makes sense! Colour theory is not always the easiest thing to explain. It is a lot easier to demonstrate and show in person!

There are two ways, each achieves a different 'darkening.'
Add a tiny bit of black to a gob of sufficient yellow paint.
If that doesn't darken it enough, add a bit more, etc - BUT -
do not add too much black at a time because you should work UP from the primary color to the darkened color you want.
You can also add a tiny bit of yellow's 'opposite' on the color-wheel, purple, which gives you a different effect.
Either way, you diminish the yellowness.
That information comes from years as an artist, not from guess work.

Yellow is a difficult color to work with. You can add black, but you are likely to get a putrid greenish-gray. Violet will darken yellow, but also make the color dull. Depending on the shade of yellow, I would try a little dark blue along with a warm brown (such as burnt sienna) and mix very carefully, adding only a little at a time because it is easy to make a muddy grey-brown color.

Well some people are probably going to say black or gray, but in doing so you take the "brilliance" out of the yellow, which if your using that color to begin with you must want a little. So I would suggest using either a small coffee can,or something like that and start and small amounts of red, just plain red,I think you just might gets the desired resultd your looking for, hope this helps you
