My husband tells me that I occasionally cry in my sleep. I'm not aware that I'm doing it. I don't wake up with tears on my face. But he insists that it's happening.

I originally thought it might be a manifestation of depression, brought on by stress or trauma or something of that nature, but I haven't really had anything like that. I'm a happy, healthy, well-adjusted person that hasn't experienced any trauma of any significance EVER, and doesn't have a problem with stress.

I don't dream sad dreams. My dreams are usually funny and bizarre, but never sad or traumatic. I'm about as happy a person as I can be short of maybe winning the lottery, so I'm not sure what's going on.

Anybody else have something like this happening to them?

Honestly, either your husband thinks you are crying or something is bothering you that you that has not been addressed. Usually, crying while sleeping is rooted in your self conscious. I am not an expert, but from my own life's experience of crying in my sleep, it was my husband who would tell me. Although, I would sometimes wake up with dewy tears, and really couldn't figure it out. In my case, it was caused by the stress of being at home and taking care of my four kids. But, soon after, I started to relax and the night time crying stopped. Just as you believe you are adjusted, I thought I was happy mommy, super wife, and always making people laugh. Don't worry because it may just be a passing phase. But, just in case this should continue, consider seeing a doctor. Currently, I am seeing a neurologist for a sleep disorder, but not for night time sleep.

I have woken up crying. What it was was a sad dream. About my sister who passed away a long time ago. I thought I had come to terms with her death but I started remembering some dreams that were about her. This has caused me to wake up crying or has made someone else wake me up because I was crying. We don't always remember our dreams, especially the dreams we dream when we are in deep sleep. Maybe that's what's going on for you as well. I am also a happy person.

Dear cherry:

By your account it doesn't appear to be of a physical nature and perhaps your tears may be tears of joy!. You have a great vocabulary and you express yourself very well however, I am not certain if you are truly convinced how happy that you are. So why not look in the mirror and ask yourself if you are truly happy and should you respond with a "yes" then embrace your tears with joy.

PS. Have you considered allergies or a new pillow?
