If a teacher goes to school on the weekend to help coach the basketball team, can he claim those miles as a business expense, along with those where he drove to seminars etc?

I know you can't for your regular commute. But to go to school to volunteer to coach on a day off, I thought it might be different.

If part of his job includes coaching the basketball team then he would not be able to deduct the mileage. If he is doing it because his son or daughter participates on the team he would not be able to., because he would also be providing transportation for the child.

School events are not considered to be volunteer events for charitable deductions.

So if it is part of his job, it would still be considered commuting expense
If it was for volunteering, it would not fit the description of a charitable contribution.

You can only deduct mileage if it is between more than one location on the same day, or if it outside your local area, like seminars, away games for the basketball team etc. No, not when you go in on a day off.

Mileage driving to and from volunteering is deductible as a charitable donation, if you itemize. No, it's not a business expense - you're volunteering, so the coaching isn't a business for you.

No, any drive from your house to your primary work location is considered commuting. He cannot deduct those miles.
