im not a shrink but it sounds to me like your man has o.c.d obsessive compulsive disorder or it may just be a route for him thinking i know that sound a bit crazy the reason i say that is that i have o.c.d and vacuum 3/4 times a day and when i do the marks on the carpet have to in parallel lines, but it helps me deal with stress, heres a tip if you have a tumble dryer try to have it on when he realy starts to get on your nerves, get him to sit as close as you can get him too it i know that sounds realy crazy but the noise from the dryer is like a constant hum i.e the same dull hum you would get from a hoover...try what you got to loose

He's a nut. My dad was like that a little, though. Nobody else was allowed to vacuum, and we negotiated his vacuuming times so that he could do it to his heart's content.

If he vacuumed at other times than the agreed-upon times, any of us was allowed to hide the vacuum cleaner or even give it away.

You could also give him a room that he can vacuum at any time, like the kitchen or the garage. It doesn't matter that there's no carpet in there.

Sounds as if he has OCD when it comes to cleaning. It's great that he takes pride in his home and wants it clean but 10 times a day sounds pretty annoying and would frustrate me. I would talk to him about it and how it is inconveniencing me. It really does sounds as if he has OCD try taking him to counseling or better yet try looking on-line to find different strategies that can reduce his obsession to vacuum. You shouldn't feel as if you want to hide the vacuum!!
