Springer Spaniels are excellent dogs for families with children. Extremely loving, smart, and playful. They shed (all dogs do), but not excessively, and are a nice medium size.
EDIT: musicimprovedme, dogs calm down after one litter? That’s a myth believed only by the ignorant and misinformed. Please do not add to the pet population or encourage people to breed irresponsibly by spreading silly lies like that. As for not being “pound puppies,” go into any shelter, and you will always see many labs. 25% of all shelter dogs are purebred.

Pit bulls! They love children and have such short fur that they shed very little. My 9 year old pit never sheds and is very wonderful with children, adults, and all other animals.
I recommend you check out your local animal shelter and adopt an older dog. This way you can find a dog with ideal fur and temperament. Plus you will save a dog from certain death. But understand that this is a big commitment to make. Don't take dog ownership lightly. Too many people buy or adopt dogs only to "get rid" of them later. Be a responsible pet owner:)
Good luck to you!
Musicimp.....allowing a female dog to have a litter before spaying does NOT calm them down!! It only adds to the overpopulation of unwanted pets in the shelter. It's people like you who are to blame for the senseless euthanasia of so many animals!!!!!!!

sry to burst your bubble but all dogs shed. its a natural thing they grow a thick coat in the winter and then in the spring they shed it off. I have a chocolate lab and hes awsome. My little brother whos 2 pulls his ears the whole 9 yards and my dog just sits there. I would say any labrodar retreivers because they are good dogs but dont feed them to much or they will get fat. About the hair you could always shve the dog but thats mean. Good Luck finding a dog.

I would suggest an English Springer Spaniel. If you keep the coat short and managed, the shedding and dander is kept to a minimal. Spaniels are active dogs that love their people and especially children! I happen to think the Cocker Spaniel is the ideal family dog, nice size, great temperaments, and all-around happy dogs!!
Happy searching!!

The rat terrier comes in different sizes ranging from 8 lbs to 30 lbs. They love children, but are high energy. Make sure you have time to exercise your dog no matter what breed you get. The rat terriers don't have medical problems except allergies, which you can fix with the food you choose. Their hair is very short and while they do shed it isn't much. My rat terrier only sheds when he's nervous or agitated.

Someone said Lab, if you are looking for a dog that doesn't shed A LOT, DO NOT get a lab! They are great dogs but they do shed A LOT!

Dogs all shed...hahah..
I personally love labs. I was raised with labs and I loved them, they are so nice in families, they are gentle with kids, loving, and live nice long lives so they can be part of your family until young kids are up in high school, a whole childhood pet. My advice would be to get a young dog, with no known history of abuse (who isn't screwed up and nippy) that can grow up with your kids and really be a part of your family.
Labs do need a lot of room, they are ideal farm dogs, or at least a large house if indoors, and/or outside a lot to walk the neighborhood or play at the park. They also get rather large as medium sized dogs go.
My experience is that labs are really smart, lovable, and energetic, but not high strung. They are a fun playmate and they settle down easy, they are also very loyal and protective without being dangerous...as in, they will keep very close eye on your kids if anyone new is around, but they don't usually bite. They take to training very very well. Again, excellent with kids and if the big kid in the family likes to hunt, they are instinctive bird dogs and can be trained to hunt duck, pheasant, and goose very easily.
PS if you let a female of any breed have one litter before spaying they tend to settle down a little. This can temper a lab female if you think they would be too energetic. And if your dog is pure and bred to a purebreed, esp with papers, these will not be orphaned. Purebred labs bring nice money. You won't make a living at it..but they aren't pound puppies either.

Portuguese Water Dog --- does not shed in the typical sense - like a poodle just loses hair when the follicle dies. This will be our next dog!

I LOVE my bichon frise. He's great with EVERYONE, kids, old people... anybody who comes over. He doesn't shed... He weighs 12 pounds-- some bichons are smaller than others though. The only downside is that they are white, so can be difficult to keep clean. I bathe mine with head and shoulders and then brush him, and he smells great and is sooo soft! He just loves to cuddle and play!

Irish Terriers shed VERY little and are great with kids. Require little grooming, and are not prone to hereditary diseases like a lot of breeds. They are fearless and will protect their people with their lives. Medium sized, not too big, not too small.
