almost every single night when we put our labrador retriever in its kennel, she lays down for a while, then gets up and starts to "dig" in her kennel as if she is digging a hole....what is up with that? it makes this really annoying scratching sound. and she does it randomly throughout the night.

Right,it's a nesting behavior. Canines dig and scratch up the area they are going to sleep for the night,it's instinctual. Take heart, your dog is comfortable in her sleeping area, she's just fluffing her kennel.

It is nesting behaviour and normal for dogs to whether crated or not, get the floor measurements of your crate and at the pet store look in the pet bed section for crate pads, they make them specifically to fit various crate sized, the sherpa/lambswool type will probably be best for withstanding the nesting without getting shredded.

If your dog has destroyed beds chewing on them do an online search for chew proof crate pads that come with chew guarantees like Orvis.com

She don't like being in a cage. Spend a couple nights in there & see what you think of it. My dogs have the run of the house, their own couch & chair & bed & I don't have that problem. I feel sorry for your dog, NOT you. If it bugs you that much, find her a good home.

She is nesting put a thick bed in there that covers the bottom of the cage so she won't do that

she is ruffling the bed covers of her bed.

Give her some blankets to root around in or cut her nails so she cannot dig
