You do not need a passport to come to Canada. The rules have not changed in that regard. What has changed is when you go to the USA.

If you are flying, effective January 23, 2007, you will need a passport to return to the USA. ("re-enter the USA" as in the WHTI law that is so confusing)

If you are driving, you will need an original birth certificate (proof of citizenship) and a piece of government issued photo ID (drivers license). This won't change until January 2008, when you will need a passport by land and water then to "re-enter" the USA.

Enjoy your trip!

We don't require a passport to enter by car or by rail, if you fly the US will require a passport to reenter the US, if you travel here, all you need to show is a driver's licence, birth certificate or a piece of picture ID, for children under 16 it is a birht certificate, you Social Security card is not acceptable.

When flying into Canada, it is not nessessary either, but the US Customs may ask for a more detail piece of ID.

If you are going this spring and not flying or going and coming by ship, then you do not need a passport. Take proof of I.D., drivers license, birth certificate, voter registration. Next year even if you drive you will need a passport.

If your driving not until Jan 2008, if your flying you need one now.
