Gallbladder troubles can cause pain in the upper back, usually just under the shoulder blade and sometimes to the side. Back muscles can also spasm, much like those that cause labor contractions, and be very painful as well. If you recently did some lifting, or fell, or anything else that might have strained those muscles, then they could be spasming as a result. Gall bladder troubles would be more likely triggered by a high fat meal, and most notable an hour or so later. You'd also probably feel nauseated and bloated. You haven't given a really good location on this pain, so it's hard to say what else could be a contributing factor. Try taking a hot bath or shower, to see if that eases it up some, or something like Motrin. If it is due to muscles, those two things should give you some relief. If it doesn't help and the pain is also under the rib cage on the right, then it may be the gallbladder. If it doesn't improve fairly quickly, it would probably be best to visit the doctor.

I have gallbladder problems (getting mine taken out in 2 weeks). Anyway, I had really bad shoulder and back pain... more towards right shoulder. So, we went and met with a surgeon and that is how he figured out it was my gallbladder. He did say that shoulder and back pain can be caused by a lot of different things in your abdomen. So, I would reccomend seeing a gastrointerologist (spelling?). They specialize in the stomach, abdomen and digestive area. With gallbladder problems the pain is usually located in the front of your shoulder (which mine was in the back so.. its not referred pain) but.. both my surgeon and orthopedic said that they thought it was until they knew it was in the back of my shoulder. Since yours in the back I am not sure what it is. I would very much recommend seeing a gastro doctor and an orthopedic. You may want to see your primary care physician first and see where he/she wants to send you.
Good Luck!!

I am not a doctor or expert but I can suggest that if you are close to your period then it might just be bad cramps... I have gotten them before and they are nasty. If it continues for much longer and you are no where near time for your period it could be gullstones, kidney stones or maybe just plain old muscle cramps. If you are really worried get to a doctor, I know everyone says that but it is good advice, especially for persistant symptoms.

Could be muscle spasms. See a Dr.
