The reason that most cookie doughs are considered "unsafe" to eat before baking is because they usually contain raw eggs which could be contaminated with salmonella. I generally don't worry about it - so long as they were properly refrigerated. If you really want to eat them, I would put it in the freezer first, so that it kills any bacteria then eat them (they taste great frozen too).

I've never gotten sick from eating raw cookie dough but the chance is of getting salmonella from the eggs is there. Alton Brown, the host of Good Eats on Food Network, buys pasteurized eggs for his cookie recipes. Apparently, these eggs are heated then cooled very carefully to kill any germs. Alton said on NPR that the egg white looks smoky but is fine.

People are so freaked out about this kind of stuff. And yes--it's the eggs in the dough.
I've been eating raw cookie dough/brownie batter/cake batter (all with eggs) practically since birth. In my 31 years on this planet, I've yet to get sick... :)

I've lived for 46 years eating raw cookie dough (raw eggs and all). If you use eggs that are fresh and undamaged, the odds of getting salmonella are extremely low. Let's face it, it's possible to get food poisoning from anything you eat, if it's contaminated.

If you are making from scratch and the eggs are fresh, then no, you are in no harm. I would even think that the eggs used in the ready-bake variety had been chemically pasturized to keep a longer shelf life. I say go for it!

i've been wanting to get a box of egg beaters or whatever because i'm pretty sure it is pasteurized.
i thought that might be a way to be able to safely taste the dough next time i prepare a batch
XD
